As a sisterhood comprised primarily of Black, college-educated women, the Sorority seriously considers the issues impacting the Black community and boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and the strengthening of African American families have evolved. The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.
Since its founding in 1913 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust
Activities in these areas involve Delta members as volunteers in direct services, catalysts for community action, and recruiters of inter-agency support for issues (public and private), leaders in networking and coalition building with other organizations, and sources and resources for the securing and dissemination of information. An integral part of the public service program is the continuous maintenance of an effective system for the gathering and retrieval of data in order to make analyses and evaluations.
Delta’s national office encourages innovative program approaches by awarding seed money for various types of programs to chapters that meet the selection criteria. Successful local program models are disseminated and replicated by chapters. Pilot programs are also initiated at the national level with a plan for replication and followup.Task groups are formed at the national and local levels to impact single purposes and selected concerns.
